Jackson’s death draws awareness about prescription drugs
The recent death of pop-icon, Michael Jackson has drawn the nation’s attention to misuse and abuse of prescription drugs. This is a major issue nation wide especially among youth.
According to the 2008 Monitoring the Future Report, of the top 10 drugs that high school students are misusing, seven are legal prescriptions or over the counter drugs.
To Prevent Prescription Abuse,
Each of us can:
Lock up prescriptions.
Encourage non-pharmaceutical options when possible.
Encourage educational achievement.
Be a positive role model.
Insist on consistent law enforcement.
Urge preventive actions when prescription abuse issues are publicized.
Encourage schools to consistently enforce zero tolerance policies.
Ask local government to set community standards that don’t glamorize drug use.
Be the neighbor with whom teens would talk about something important to them.
Notice when a youth does a good job and compliment that person.
