Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol (CMCA). CMCA is a evidence-based communitiy organizing strategy to reduce underage access to alcohol. Alcohol is still the most misused substance and underage drinking still has the most harmful longterm impact upon our youth and our communities. In addition, when we’re effective in supporting healthy beliefs and clear standards about alcohol, we’ll doing the same for other drugs abused by youth.
Social Marketing to Change Community Norms. Our choices are often guided by what we think is “normal” or “easier.” Changing what we do, like not supplying alcohol to a youth, doing something else to relieve stress, not driving after drinking, finding another ride when the driver has been drinking . . .all require us to understand the “cost” of what we do, and the “benefit” of making a safer, healthier choice. ACHC is providing training in the 10 steps of social marketing to inform audiences about the choices they make.
“Familiy Guide to Safe Parties” Most parents want to set clear expectations for their children. The brochure, “Family Guide to Safe Parties” gives suggestions to parents about guidelines for youth gatherings. The research is clear: most Oakland County youth who drink alcohol get the alcohol from friends and family members. These guidelines are written to help parents model healthy beliefs and clear family standards.

Alcopops target underage youth. Recent survey results published by the American Medical Association showed that teenage girls report drinking alcopops more than other alcoholic drinks, while adult women over 21 years of age report alcopops as their least consumed alcoholic beverages American Medical Association. “Alcopops” are fruit-flavored, malt-based drinks that come in colorful, teen-oriented packaging. The sweetness and flavoring hide the taste of alcohol but these drinks typically contain 5-7 percent alcohol by volume, more than most beers. Popular brands are Smirnoff Ice, Skyy Blue, Stolichnaya Citrona, Bacardi Silver, Jack Daniel’s Original Hard Cola, Captain Morgan Gold and Mike’s Hard Lemonade.
